Free or Cheap Ways to Read Magazines

turnit online magazine serviceOne of the best things about the Internet is all the free information that is available. Sites like Wikipedia offer a staggering amount of information at no cost. Many prominent news sites such as CNN.com and the Huffington Post are free as well.

But what about magazines and newspapers? While most websites run by major publications offer some amount of free information, many are starting to require subscriptions if you want access to premium content. Unfortunately, subscriptions to online magazines and newspapers are not exactly cheap. For example, a Kindle subscription to the New York Times or Wall Street Journal will cost you $20 a month or more.

Having said that, there are still many ways to get magazines for free or at very little cost. Here are some popular ways you may want to consider:

  1. Go to a library or bookstore.
This is one of the oldest and best ways to read an unlimited number of magazines for free. The only downside is that you can't take the magazines with you or check them out, so you are stuck in one location until you are done reading. Fortunately, most bookstores have nice caf├ęs where you can hang out for hours. And even some libraries these days are serving coffee and other beverages.

If you do spend a lot of time at bookstores reading magazines for free, we recommend that you buy an issue or two every now and then to help keep them in business.

  2. Read magazines online for free using turnIt.
Turnit allows you to read quite a few magazines for free. However, you won't find popular titles like Newsweek or Time. Instead, your selection will include titles such as Lifestyle, Explorer, and Cottage Life, among other relatively obscure titles. Avid readers, however, will appreciate the fact that they can access quite a lot of interesting content at no cost.

  3. Get free trials on Kindle or other devices.
While digital subscriptions on devices like Kindle and Nook are pricey, the good news is that you can get a couple weeks of each publication for free. You'll eventually have to cancel the subscription to avoid charges, but this is a great way to enjoy the full content of many publications for a limited time while you decide which magazines are worth paying for. The selection of publications you can subscribe to on Kindle and Nook is impressive, but many great magazines, such as Psychology Today, are still not available. This should change as more and more people start using e-readers.

  4. Join Next Issue
This is a new service that offers 131 magazines that you can read on a PC or mobile device for one low monthly price.

For $9.99, you can get the Basic plan, which includes popular magazines such as Money, Health, Fortune, Fitness, Esquire, Car and Driver, and many others. The Premium plan, which costs $14.99 a month, will allow you to also enjoy additional weekly magazines like People, The New Yorker and Time. Compared to the cost of subscribing to each magazine separately, a Next Issue subscription definitely delivers a lot of content for a modest monthly fee. In fact, we consider it to be one of the best ways to enjoy a collection of premium magazines affordably. A 30-day free trial of Next Issue is currently available to anyone who wants to test-drive this service.
